Angell, Marcia. "Fraud in Science," a review of Betrayers of the Truth by William Broad and
Nicholas Wade. Science 219 (25 March 1983), pp. 1417-1418.
This is an unfavorable review of the book, appearing in Science, the magazine for which the two
authors worked. Rather than appreciating their metaphor, this reviewer can best be quoted: "(The
authors are guilty of)...extravagant ruminations on the nature of science..." and they have clearly
"...lost their way..."
The reviewer sees some merit in the book - but it is the merit which is closest to the heart of a
loyalist. Broad and Wade have criticized the scientific profession for not taking action, quickly
and more drastically, against those who have been caught cheating.
