Batchelor, John Calvin. "Death Dogged Her Footsteps," review of The Ballad of Typhoid Mary
by J. F. Federspiel (New York: Dutton, 1984). New York Times Book Review, 12 February
1984, p. 11.
Here is a novel about a scientific oddity, based on the life of Typhoid Mary. This author has
found out what little is known of the actual case and fictionalized the tale. His account is based
on the account by George Soper, in the Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine. The
novel is an image of the individual's helplessness in confronting facing the world.
