Benefits of Achuete

Achuete, also known as Bixa acuminata Poir (scientific name), are planted all throughout the Philippines. It is a native plant in the tropics of America. It is a pantropic plant widely cultivated and naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the rest of the world.

The root-bark is antiperiodic and antipyretic. It acts as aphrodisiac or detoxifier. The leaves are diuretic, antipyretic, purgative. The seeds are slightly astringent while the fine powder covering the seed is hemostatic and stomachic. The pulp (annatto) surrounding the seeds is astringent and slightly purgative.
