With its scientific name annona squamosa, this plant is also known as custard apple seed, sugar apple, and sweetsop in English. It is known that atis is introduced from tropical America by the Spaniards to the Philippines. Now, it is cultivated in the country or occasionally grows spontaneously.

Atis has vermicidal, insecticidal, astringent, tonic, drastic purgative, emmenagogue, febrifuge, antiovulatory, abortifacient, analgestic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antidiabetic, and cytotoxic, antioxidant, antilipimic, anti-ulcer, molluscicidal, genotoxic, vasorelaxant, hepatoprotective, larvacidal, and anthelmintic effects. It could be eaten raw or mixed with other igredients to make ice cream.
