Boffey, Philip M. "U.S. Cites Scientist's Errors in Denying a Grant Request," New York Times,
20 June 1984, p.
Here is a report of Illmensee's turndown by NIH. The Institute cited "documented deficiencies"
in turning down his request for support. What is not told here are the accusations of wrongdoing,
of winging it in science. The paradox here is that so many would like to find out if the original
work were correct. The odds are now that he will be unable to get the money to redo a study
which is so important that it should be replicated.
NIH is taking the safe position in not supporting him. However, one cannot help but wonder how
many others would also be found to have documented deficiencies if their works were subjected
to the same sort of scrutiny as has Illmensee's.
