Amato, Ivan. "The Hubble: One Sick Puppy," Science 253 (9 August 1991), p. 627.
This article reports the cost of the Hubble Space Telescope to be $2.1 billion. Heretofore, the
figure has been @1.5 billion. But it is not only the total cost that is being updated: turns out that
there are more problems with the HST. The gyroscopes are failing. Two of six have failed and
there is a "sudden thirst for power" for yet another. And the plans to fix one problem do not
always mesh with the fixes scheduled for others.
When problems develop for Big Science, they are Big Problems.
